Mold design, specifically for the extrusion die, is a discipline where engineering precision meets material science, and it is absolutely critical for producing high quality thermal break strips. The extrusion die is a complex block of high grade, hardened tool steel that acts as the final gateway, shaping the molten polyamide into its definitive profile. The internal flow channel, or manifold, must be scientifically designed, often using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, to ensure the viscous polymer melt flows at a perfectly uniform velocity across the entire cross section of the die outlet. Any imbalance in flow will result in a distorted product, manifesting as curling, warping, or unacceptable variations in wall thickness. The land length—the final parallel section of the die—must be carefully calibrated to apply the correct backpressure, which is essential for consolidating the melt and eliminating weld lines, thereby ensuring optimal mechanical properties and a smooth, high quality surface finish. For complex thermal break profiles that may include multiple chambers or intricate locking features, the die design becomes even more paramount. Through our Polywell collaboration, we have direct access to profound expertise in die design and manufacturing. We create durable, wear resistant dies that maintain their precise geometry over millions of extrusion cycles, even with abrasive glass filled materials, guaranteeing that our clients can produce consistent, dimensionally accurate, and high performance thermal break strips day after day.
